The day started off on the wrong foot. Our itinerary said that our flight was to leave San Francisco at 9:15 am. It also said we should arrive 3 hours before our departure time. When we arrived at the airport, we found that the flight had been moved back to 10:15, we were 4 hours early. The baggage check in and security took about 15 minutes. We were at the gate three and a half hours early. While we were waiting I saw our plane sitting at the gate and took the picture below. The plane was an Airbus A321.
As I looked at the horizontal stabilizer where it meets the fuselage, it looks like someone bashed the sheet metal with a mallet to make room for the stabilizer. We made it all the way to Philadelphia so it must be normal.
I keep reading how much airline travel has decreased since September 11th, but in 4 of the last 6 flights I have been on the planes were over booked. This was the case for both the legs to Philadelphia and to Munich. On the flight to Philadelphia, Nancy and I could not sit together. I tried to change places with the people sitting next to her, but they did not want to move. She said she did not get any sleep on the plane. She also did not sleep the night before the departure due to her dogs making noise.
Once again we flew on an airline (US Air) that does not serve food on the flight. It was 6 hours on just peanuts and a coke. On our arrival in Philadelphia, we went to our departure gate, the one listed on our ticket that we were given that morning. Once at the gate we were told the flight had moved to another gate which took us another 15 minutes to reach. We arrived just as they were boarding the plane. We did not have any time to buy anything to eat. Thankfully the flight to Munich served food.
